PHONE ORGANIZING – GET POLITICAL & GET PAID! (Brooklyn, NY)

Date: Wed 14 Aug 2013

Working Families is hiring new and experienced progressive activists to join our phone team.

For the past twelve years we have elected progressive candidates, won groundbreaking issue campaigns like raising the minimum wage and passage of paid sick days legislation, and have shaped the debate in city halls and state capitols in New York, Connecticut, New Jersey, and Oregon–and we’re growing fast!

We are looking for outgoing, creative, determined, fun, persuasive activists that have a desire to help bring about political progress. As an organizer on the phone team, you will be reaching out to Working Families supporters, educating the public, putting pressure on elected officials and fundraising on our issue-based campaigns.

Working Families staffers receive hands-on experience with statewide political campaigns and community organizing. We provide on-the-job paid training, extensive classroom-style briefings and lectures from guest speakers who are leaders in the progressive movement. In addition to the opportunity to make history and earn a paycheck, there are management opportunities within the organization and our affiliate networks. We are looking to train the next generation of progressive leaders and to help educate and mobilize voters on important issues like debt-free higher education, a ban on fracking, public financing of elections and electing progressives to office.

The hours are Monday to Thursday, 4 to 9 PM, plus Sundays 1-6 PM. Starting pay is $12 an hour (with regular pay increases) plus commission.

Experience with canvassing or fundraising is a plus, but not a requirement. It may be enough to have some other experience dealing with the general public–acting, waiting tables, sales, census work, political organizing–or just being a people person!

In addition to communication skills, we are looking for people who are:
– Eager to be part of a dynamic team.
– Interested in social & economic justice.
– Genuinely committed to making a difference.
– Energetic, driven, confident, and self-motivated.
– And who have a good sense of humor.

Apply by:

Emailing jgolbe@workingfamilies.org with the subject line WANT TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE!

Please attach your resume and include 1-2 paragraphs about who you are and why you want to work for social, economic and racial justice. No need to write an extensive cover letter, and try to write like a normal person, rather than horrible “professional-ese”. (“I utilize my abilities to achieve performance standards,” etc.)

The Working Families is an equal opportunity employer with a commitment to social justice. Women, people of color, members of the LGBTQ community are strongly encouraged to apply.

Location: Brooklyn

Compensation: Starting $12/hr, part-time, Salaried Positions, Healthcare, PTO, Organizational Advance
